Read the true case of how a Bahraini patient at Mediclinic Welcare Hospital was able to get control back

A patient with advanced Parkinson’s disease was referred to me for further management post her deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery.

She needed urgent programming post-surgery as she was finding it challenging with activities of daily living including being unable to walk, care for herself and being wheelchair bound due to her disease.

She was on lots of medication which was affecting her. It was a challenging case and quite distressing to the patient and her family.

After discussing extensively with the patient and family she was given a management plan. She underwent DBS programming under my care which was quite intense but rewarding. All was done in the outpatient department over a few hours and at the end of the day she walked out of my clinic without any support.

Her medication was reduced to one third and she was able to do her ADL with ease. The patient and her family felt delighted and it is rewarding to see her smile at the end of the day.

What is deep brain stimulation?

Deep brain stimulation is a surgical procedure where we implant electrodes to various targets to treat patients of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, tremor, chorea etc.

Post implantation we stimulate these brain nuclei with a pulse generator which needs programming to give the best clinical benefits to these patients.

An important point in the success of this procedure is the correct patient selection. We do in a pre-operative and intra-operative assessment of the patient for improvement of signs on the surgical table, precise implantation of electrode, and post implantation programming.

This is the beauty of this procedure as it can give good relief for these patients that is long lasting.

Patient Testimonial

After the procedure was done, an interview was held with the patient, named "A.S" (female Bahraini).

The patient said, “I was suffering for a long time and heard about the procedure at Mediclinic Welcare Hospital from my friends in Dubai. I searched the Mediclinic website and booked an appointment and flew from Bahrain to Dubai accordingly.

The service was amazing and I got the best treatment possible from Dr. Pushparaja Shetty.

The whole procedure of DBS programming went well and it has relieved me from a lot of pain, made my movement easier, and it has reduced the amount of medication I take which in return has made me feel stronger and having more energy.

Thank you Dr. Pushparaja Shetty and thank you Mediclinic Welcare Hospital."
