The newly offered licence plate design was inspired by Dubai's licence plates in the 1980s

In the last few years, the world has witnessed a return of the 1980s, from 80s-themed TV series and movies to synth-pop inspired radio hits. Dubai is also looking to bring vintage back.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced earlier this week that an old-school licence plate will be available to vintage car-lovers and classic car-owners in the emirate.

This vintage license plate was introduced thanks to a directive under His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, and is inspired by plates used by Dubai cars in the 1980s.

In a change from the current brown plates, the colour scheme of the newly designed retro plates features yellow and features improvements to ensure design alignment with Dubai’s standard vehicles plates.

“With the new design, the plates can be clearly and easily read from a distance. The design has two distinct elements - the words Dubai and Classic are written in both Arabic and English on a yellow background, while the number is written on a white background," said His Excellency Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA.

The revamped vintage license plate meets all the required technical standards.

"The plates have a touch of luxury and feature innovative digital printing. Moreover, they are not affected by different climate conditions,” added Al Tayer.

RTA will begin issuing the new optional plates for classic vehicles only from November 2020.

Interested car owners can place a request either through RTA’s website or the customer happiness centre in Deira,

For a vehicle to be designated as "classic", it must be over 30 years old.

The vehicle must also meet the RTA's technical testing requirements.
