Al Hijri Public Holiday in UAE Will Fall on September 1

UAE residents can expect to enjoy a long, three-day weekend...

The Islamic New Year holiday is very likely to fall on Sunday, September 1.

According to Islamic astronomers, the moon can be seen on August 30 only in Polynesian Islands, and in some parts of the US with optical gear. Based on this, Muharram 1, 1441 will happen on September 1 as the crescent can be seen easily in the UAE and the rest of the world on August 31.

It means that UAE residents will have a three-day weekend from August 31 to September 1. During this time, government offices will remain closed from Friday to Sunday, and students are set to return to school on September 2.

The UAE government has long-since announced that Muharram 1 (Islamic New Year) will be an official holiday for both the public and private sector.

An official announcement will be made on Friday evening August 30, once the moon sighting happens.

Compared to the Gregorian calendar, the Islamic month starts with the sighting of a new moon cycle. The Islamic calendar follows an estimate of future Islamic events rather than fixed dates, thus it depends entirely on the movement and visibility of the moon.
