Torba Farmers Market in Doha, Qatar

This season market in Doha is a must-visit experience for all expats living here.

Held at the beautiful Ceremonial Court at the Qatar Foundation every Saturday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm November through April, Torba Farmers Market (TFM) is a great way to spend some quality outdoor time enjoying delicious food and drinks while pursuing local artisans’ handcrafted items.

What can you find at the Torba Farmers Market?

There is truly something for everyone at this fantastic farmers market. Approximately 60 vendor stalls are present each Saturday and the diversity is dynamic.

Fresh Produce

“Torba” is an Arabic word meaning: “The pure soil that feeds, nourishes and nurtures.” TFM incorporates this inspiration when curating the finest local and regional fruit and vegetables.

Although the selection is not extensive, you will not find fresher produce at such competitive prices at any supermarket throughout Doha. A bag of bright green, fresh baby bok choy or a substantial bushel of green beans is only QAR 10. A kilogram of vibrant, green capsicum is QAR 6. If you compare to supermarkets throughout Doha you will find it is 1/2 to 1/3 the price. Cucumbers, eggplant, zucchini, jalapenos, peppers, and several lettuce variations are gorgeously on display and are extremely affordable.

Al Safwa Farm, Qatar’s only certified organic farm, and Sharq Farms offer fresh produce at TFM each weekend. Al Safwa Farm has an impressive and interesting history spanning over 50 years in the local market. In 2013, the UK's Prince Charles visited Nasser al-Kuwari, owner of Al Safwa Farms, and commended him on his initiatives and success at organic farming in such a challenging climate.

In the same year, al-Kuwari’s farm achieved international accreditation by Germany’s International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements. Stop by and pick up some fresh vegetables, your healthy self will be thankful.

Food & Drink

If you enjoy vegan, gluten-free options than this are the place for you! Brownies, bread, salads, burgers, burritos, nachos - you name it! If street food is more your style, stop by BAO for a tantalizing bao bun. There is no shortage of healthy food options and a substantial selection means there is something for everyone.

After enjoying the main course, you must splurge on dessert. Cookies, cakes, macarons, ice cream, fresh-pressed fruit juice popsicles, and dates are just some of the simply sweet options. And there is no shortage of coffee or juice to accompany your bites or to quench your thirst. Lastly, ensure that you bring a water bottle along so that you can fill up at one of the two complimentary water stations.

Artisan Gifts

It is rewarding when you find the perfect gift and it is handmade by a local artist. Several interesting and unique artists are on hand to provide you with the perfect gift - whether it is for friends, family or yourself. Original paintings, fragrant candles, delicious chutney, and various raw products from oils, butter and soaps await. Several young, aspiring women were showcasing their stylish souvenir creations. Antipodes carries fun and fanciful Qatar-centric items that are sure to be a hit under the Christmas tree.

If you do not wish to purchase on the spot, most of the artists have Instagram accounts where you can contact them, place an order and delivery within Doha can be arranged.

In addition, Refill Station is a locally made, environmentally friendly way to refill your cleaning or beauty products. Bring or purchase a bottle and fill it with chemical-free kitchen surface cleaner or dishwashing liquid to contribute to reducing waste. The Refill Station also offers charcoal or Qatari clay-based handmade soap, body lotion and a charcoal face mask. Ideal for home or the perfect gift.

Flowers & Plants

A few vendors offer a lovely selection of flower arrangements and indoor/outdoor plants. Surprise your partner or a neighbor with a thoughtful bouquet or plant or simply pick up something for your home.

Children's Play Area

There is a children’s play area that offers several activities for young tots. A LEGO table, painting station, sand table, drawing tables, and oversized Connect Four are available to keep children entertained and stimulated. For older children, there is a lifesize word search (in both English and Arabic) kiosk adjacent to the play area. There is also plenty of room for kids to run in the grass and enjoy the sunshine.

Dogs Welcomed

Fancy taking your dog on a morning out to socialize? Dogs on a leash can accompany their owners from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm, however, the noon cut off time does not appear to be strictly enforced. Remember to bring a collapsible water bowl for filling at the Water Station to keep your pet hydrated. While there is ample shading at the TFM, the sunny, winter afternoons can still get quite warm.

Torba Farmers Market is a celebration of locally grown produce, homemade cuisine and artisanal endeavor that is the perfect weekend outing.
