There is a FB group called Shadow Teachers Dubai, if you join that you can ask on there and hopefully you'll be able to find someone with experience on there. Also, some teachers are also on that group so they may be able to advise you too. You will have to go through the process of interviewing until you find someone that matches your son's need. Good Luck.

I think a lot of users just post on Facebook groups now. Are there any good expat Facebook groups for Dubai that you recommend @ coco pops? I see quite a few for housing developments but any general ones? Thanks! Not sure if I'm allowed to name groups, but many communities have their own FB groups, so maybe do a search? I found lots of support from the gardening groups when I first started gardening here. I do agree with SEY83 , searching posts is much easier on here.

At this present moment in time.....DEAR I know it's not meant in a condescending way, when it's said or written, it's just the way I interpret the word, which is why it grates on my nerves! (I just signed in especially for this, as I was just saying having a moan to DH.)

Hi, I just recently had curtains made from Dragon Mart. We had a lot of windows!! 7 windows downstairs (150 by 200cm 'ish ) , 3 windows upstairs with the same measurements, and 4 metal venetian blinds. We chose thick'ish, plain, stone coloured material which wouldn't require blackout, and our bill came to just under 3000dhs included installation, poles etc. I wasn't impressed with the finishing tbh and they messed up our order as we wanted triple the width instead of double, as we like lots of gathering. We had to knock 500 dhs off the price as they'd charged us for more material. It'll do us for now. I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on curtains for rental accommodation which I'll have to leave once I move.

If I'm on my own, I take my 12 y/o disabled son into the ladies with me, in MOE there's a disabled toilet as you enter the ladies, so it's not a problem. Otherwise, I'll take him in with me. So far I've had a few looks, but ladies mostly understand my situation. I have no idea what I'll do as he gets older, as I'll never feel entirely safe letting him go into the mens alone.....he's far too vulnerable. When my older son was 11/12, I'd stand outside the mens toilets and I'd say to him that if he wasn't out within a given time, I'd shout his name out, and then go in. Thankfully it never came to that. My LO doesn't like coming into the ladies with me, he's 6, but he knows if he's with me, he has no choice. If his older brothers or cousins are with him, then he can go into the mens together and come out together.

NO offense but aren't you old enough to be his mother!!! Technically speaking, yes but only if I'd been a teenage mother. I *think* that makes it acceptable. Or not :D I like your "thinking" lol

As Sanddy Dog said, I also know a couple of people who live in RAK and send their kids to Sharjah English School. I think it takes them roughly 45 mins, but could be less. This works for them as they work at the University by the school. Sorry I can't help you regarding the schools you mentioned. edited by coco pops on 14/05/2014

I used to buy the white box (? I think ) but haven't seen it around for quite some time now. I've looked out for it at Aswaq's, Lulu's, Union Co-op, Carrefour and Spinney's and not seen anything. My LO only likes that one too.

wouldnt have said anything, would say its none of my business. i'm not saying i agree with it but i dont think its anyones place to say. I wouldn't have said anything either, sadly. However, I remember in my first year of moving here, seeing a mother slapping her child in Carrefour, late evening time, and though I really wanted to say something, I didn't, because I didn't know how it would be received. Instead I gasped and stood there with my mouth open and looked at the mother in shock and back at her child. She did look back embarrassed and hurried off. After that incident, I did think what I would do if I ever saw it again; maybe approach them softly softly and use the "children are a blessing and gift" card on them..... Mind you, the amount of times I've literally wanted to throttle DS1 ( teenager) in the shops or whack him over the head with a hanger, if someone used that line on me, I'd probably tell them to take him, if they're such a gift.....(joke! I love him really :D)

Ultimately, it's a decision you have to make, to the best of your knowledge as you know your husband best and children better than anyone. Each person to their own in terms of careers and sacrificing their lives for their families. There's no right or wrong way as every family dynamic is different. Me, in your position? I'd probably go. My children (bar one!!) would jump at the chance to go back home, even knowing that their father would still be here. But they are older, and that probably makes a difference. Also, as someone else mentioned, it may be harder to get back into a career the longer you leave it. And yes...you may think the signs are there but discuss with your DH to gauge his feelings on the matter, he may well be very supportive and encouraging :) (You'll need to take other factors into consideration such as help with the children, after school/ holidays etc ....is help near and readily available?) edited by coco pops on 04/05/2014

It is a difficult one. For some of us Dubai will never be "home" , friends unfortunately come and go, part and parcel of living here. While we embrace the experience as much as we can for as long as we can, there does come a time when we sit and reflect on the things that matter most to us ie: family, feeling part of a community etc If it was me and I was in your situation, I'd have a heart to heart with DH. Maybe, he'll see your point and agree with you moving back with the kids? Would he be able to get a job in his field there? Perhaps while you are there, he may feel less inclined to stay here once he sees how happy and settled the family are there and start thinking about job hunting there? Also, of course you'd have to consider the children's views on the matter, especially if you are considering to split the family up for however long it may be. They may be fine with one year, but not so fine with 4 years..... I think after 5 years you can safely say that you've given a good go of things here, and I can understand why you would want to move back. Good luck edited by coco pops on 04/05/2014

Unfortunately books are usually that much more here, and I've done the same as you and bought a book because I couldn't wait lol. I tend to look prices up on Amazon now while I'm book buying. If it's a couple of pounds more I'll buy it here, otherwise I take a picture of the book and put it on my " Things to order from the UK " list.

Do you mean the sound that goes off when you exceed the 120km speed limit? If so, then, I'm pretty sure it has to be taken to the garage and one of the mechanics there will be able to switch it off. Sorry, just re-read your question re: hiring. All cars you hire will have this speed warning alarm, though I thought they're usually intermittent beeps rather than continuous. Sorry can't help regarding models etc. maybe car hire person can help you. edited by coco pops on 02/05/2014

Hmmm....I've never had anything done to my face before so I'm really umming and ahh'ing, but I really don't like the wrinkles under my eyes! I was asking my doctor who does my laser treatment, whether I needed Botox today and she said I'd benefit more from the 3D lift for the wrinkles under my eyes, and it lasts for 2 years, plus it's not that much more....

Today, I told a school bus driver, whilst stopped at the traffic lights, to ask the kids to sit down and put their belts on, for their safety. Probably wasn't my place to do so, and I could have phoned the school, but I chose to ask him in a polite way. After seeing 3 accidents yesterday, while on the school run, I'm glad I did.

I gave way to a nice mum at a pedestrian crossing and someone behind me honked very loudly, so I didnt use the curse words I was thinking of, does that count? This used to happen to me all the time, then a few weeks ago, I noticed someone using their hazards when stopping at a crossing, so since doing that, I don't get honked at as much :)

Sorry, I don't understand. Why would you give the local gentleman a tap on the back? It's just an expression coco pops, a way of saying well done. Example: 'I got first place in the race!' - 'Hurrah! Big pat on the back for you.'. Oh! I get it now! Hahaha Oops sorry OP I thought you physically gave him a pat on the back to bring the woman to his attention!

I bought mine from Global Village last year, but saw similar in Home Centre for around the same price. I also bought one from Dragon mart which wasn't as cheap as Home Centre, it was flimsy reedy type one, which I kept outdoors.

Yesterday at Dubai mall my husband and I were totally taken aback when a lady popped out her b**b and started breastfeeding while strolling along.....Have to give the local gentleman a big pat on the back. He stopped, glared and told her to "cover over!" and then stomped off. The lady in question was rather taken aback but did comply... What can we expect next??? Sorry, I don't understand. Why would you give the local gentleman a tap on the back? Was it because the lady BF'ing was a local? If she wasn't, could you not have said something to the lady in question herself, instead of putting her in a awkward position? I personally don't see anything wrong in BF'ing in public, it's the women in spaghetti strap tank tops that annoy me.

No, but tbh on the last day of term not much studying is done, so I'd let it be. I'll tell you something which has got me fuming today; my LO's school in Sharjah has only today announced that they have been directed by the MoE that school "must" close for winter break from the 13th to Jan 5th. So why does my other DS's school break up on the 19th ( in Sharjah also) ? And, why leave it till the last minute to inform parents!! I'm so annoyed, what with the recent break they just had too.

My DH's wrote this on his FB last night which made me giggle " #Expo2020 : 20% increase in rents, 20 extra minutes stuck in traffic per trip, 20 new Salik gates, 20 Dhs increase in your salary What I really don't get is why were schools given the day off yet I see labourers out working? Surely they should have been given the day off instead, as they are part of building this Dubai. I also hope they see a wage increase, especially if landlords are increasing their rents already ( which is disgraceful). I also hope there will be more part-time jobs available for people like me who want to stay at home with kids but help contribute financially to help with the future hikes in rents!!!

I'd report him. It's silly drivers like these that cause accidents, which could cost lives, not to mention traffic jams. The number is 800 4353 I have them on speed dial ;) ( I have only had cause to use them twice in 3 yrs ) They take details of car number plate along with the letter, colour, make and where the offence was committed. They then send a message to the owner of the vehicle that a report of dangerous driving was lodged against them. I see at least 3/4 accidents (sometimes more) weekly on my commute to/from Sharjah, which so easily could be avoided if drivers indicated and left a good breaking distance from the car in front!

Before we moved out here I informed the child benefit agency and other similar agencies that I would be living in the Middle East on such a such date, even though we still have a UK address, pay taxes & NI. They gave me 26 weeks worth of child benefits for that tax year, which I was surprised about tbh but they said I was entitled to it. Child Tax Credit still carried on paying into my bank, even after notifying them too, which I repaid back to them. It's better to be honest and inform them in my opinion.

Something similar happened to me. We complained on their FB page , after initially not receiving a reply to our email. We promptly received a reply soon after stating that we would be re-imbursed with the difference. Not impressed with their customer services at all, but yes the threat of social media seems to get things moving faster here. :/

I suppose parents think because perhaps their school is made up of a majority of western expats, they are fine in wearing what they want to wear, and they won't be regulated. My teenage son regulates my dress code at the moment and I dress modestly!! lol However, cheeky thing had a field day in the UK this year with the amount of legs and cheeks on show! There also needs to be consistency with the rules. A friend of mine who recently came on holiday was so confused, because she'd been ask to cover up at Dubai Zoo (she was wearing a knee length short sleeved dress). She said she saw far less covered people in the malls who never seemed to be asked to cover up.
