It was announced by a Royal decree in 2017 that women will be allowed to drive in the Kingdom as of June 24th, 2018. Women with a foreign or international driving licence that is recognized by the Kingdom can just convert their driving licence. Women whose foreign driving licence is not recognised or who do not have a driving licence will have to take a driving test to evaluate their knowledge of the Kingdom’s road rules. They will receive their licence on the same day if they pass the test.

Allowing women to drive in Saudi Arabia is part of Saudi’s Vision 2030 to reform the Kingdom. It is also a big movement in women’s rights in Saudi and has created a number of new employment opportunities for women.
