Going the Distance for Love
Meet Katie McIntosh, the socially awkward adventurer who went the distance for love.
We’re living in:
Honolulu, Hawaii
A bit about me:
I am a clumsy, free spirited, nature loving, pro wrestling fanatic who has an unfortunate knack for being socially awkward. Like when you go to buy a movie ticket and they say “enjoy the movie”… and you respond with “you too… oh sorry you’re working” Yep, that’s me!
How long have you lived there?
Since October 2013
Why did you move?
To end the long distance aspect of my relationship, marry my sweetheart and begin the next chapter of our lives together in the same country!

What are the summer months (Jun-Aug) like in your part of the world?
Summer in Hawaii is as you would expect – tropical and dreamy! I love the long days because you can fit in so much exploring and adventuring.
Is summer (Jun-Aug) the best time of year to visit?
That would depend on what you want from your visit. The big wave surf competitions are held towards the end of the year so if you are wanting to see that (and some crazy huge waves) then perhaps the end of the year would be better. If you want long days with lots of sunshine and don’t mind crowds then summer is perfect. If you want a more quiet vacation then perhaps go with a shoulder seasons to avoid the crowds.
What do you enjoy doing with your time in the summer?
Anything outside – I hate being indoors! I love the water so am usually somewhere near a beach probably snorkeling and trying to find cool animals. Other than that I love hiking, swimming, exploring new places, taking scenic photos and of course stopping for an afternoon ice cream on those hot summer days!
What’s the highest temperature it can reach in your summer time?
Probably around the late 80’s Fahrenheit. It gets pretty hot but the best thing is there is always a beach nearby to cool off in!
What do you love the most about this time of year?
The warm tropical weather. I also love the sunshine - it just makes everything seem more beautiful. The mountains look more green, the ocean looks more blue and the sand looks so bright.
What do you like the least about this time of year?
Some of the popular areas seem more crowded.
What do you wish you’d known before you moved?
That pronouncing things was about to get really tricky – the Hawaiian language is very vowel laden.
Anything else you’d like to share with us about your expat experience?
I love being an expat, isn’t it wonderful that we have the chance to experience new places? I can’t wait for my next adventure.
